20Csociety Italy War Cemeteries trip
Oslavia is best known for the shrine dedicated to the fallen of the First World War .
The shrine was built in 1938 and designed by Venturi Ghino and has an impressive central cylindrical white stone building, on the top of a staircase. It holds the remains of 57,741 soldiers, of whom about 36,000 persons unknown. The soldiers are for the vast majority Italians, but there are also buried 540 soldiers Austrians . Among the fallen Italians who are buried there are 13 gold medals , including General Achille Papa , who was killed at Bainsizza and buried at the center of the crypt.
For years, the shrine is facing extremely dilapidated condition and its stasis is at great risk, therefore, needs substantial renovations, but the Ministry of Defense does not have funds to restore.
